An Ancient Knowledge
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing system. Its origin dates back more than 5,000 years. This healing system took root at the time of the Indian Vedic civilization based on the Vedas. Veda is a collection of ancient texts gathering knowledge that was revealed to the Rishis, the Indian sages, during their meditations.
In Sanskrit, an ancient language in India, describes Ayurveda as ‘science or knowledge of life or longevity’. The name Ayurveda is derived from 2 words: Ayu meaning “life and longevity” and Veda meaning “science” or “knowledge”. Therefore, Ayurveda is “the science or knowledge of life".
Vedas say that Ayurveda is considered eternal and not created by man. It came from nature and the universe, so will always be true and eternal. Not created by man, for it was revealed to the Rishis.
This knowledge includes, the functioning of the body, astrology, and the physical sciences. Following their revelation, they were
orally transmitted by wise men to their disciples, in the form of Sutras, songs, and rhythmic texts. This oral transfer lasted thousands of years and still takes place today.
Ayurveda is more of a lifestyle and a way of perceiving our body, mind, and spirit/soul as a united whole. Ayurveda, therefore, aims to nourish us, treat us, and lift us up. Accordingly, our bodies are governed by three bio-energetic forces, and they are the doshas that is unique in every one of us. This is our body constitution, who we are and our uniqueness.
So, what is dosha? Click here for a brief description.
hence, The Difference
Ayurveda says that when there is minimal stress and the flow of energy within a person is balanced, the body’s natural defense systems is strong and can more easily defend against disease. So, one of the main purposes of Ayurveda is preventing the diseases from appearing in our body in the first place.
Ayurveda aims to do this by balancing the three doshas to achieve optimum health and well-being. It uses completely natural ingredients for healing. E.g. plants, roots, flowers leave, seeds etc.
Therefore, it is considered as non-invasive, contains no toxins that results in minimal side-effects.
